Â
Here's what I figured out the hard way.
Boundaries don't push him away. They bring you back to yourself.
So many of the women I work with tell me they have nothing left to give.
They've poured years into their husband's recovery. They've absorbed the broken promises, the betrayals, the lies. They don't recognise themselves anymore. They're angry, resentful - exhausted in a way that sleep doesn't fix.
Their empathy isn't gone because they stopped caring. It's gone because nobody protected it.
I was the same way.
I was the queen of avoiding boundaries. I thought they were harsh, controlling - not for me. I believed that setting a boundary would push him away - and that love meant holding on no matter what.
Meanwhile?
I wasn't willing to put a boundary in place….but I was willing to hate living with him every day.
I wasn't willing to put a boundary in place….but I was willing to live in constant fear of his next relapse.
I wasn't willing to put a boundary in place….but I was willing to keep resenting him - and then judge myself for it.
Here's the irony I couldn't see at the time. I avoided boundaries to protect him and to protect the relationship. But the resentment I was carrying because I had no boundaries - he felt that every single day. In every tone of voice. Every withdrawn moment. Every time I couldn't hide it anymore. A well set boundary would have done less damage than the silent, simmering version of me that showed up every morning.Â
You're not just anxious because of his addiction. You're anxious because every time something happens, you're making it up as you go.
Without a plan, your brain does what brains do - it runs every scenario, prepares for every disaster, tries to control every outcome just to feel safe. That's what happens when you have no structure for what you do next.
Without boundaries: You're checking his phone, hoping to find nothing. Your brain is running worst case scenarios on loop. You can't focus on work, your kids, or a single quiet moment because your thoughts are stuck in the what ifs. You're trying to fix, rescue, manage his stress - because somewhere deep down you believe that's what keeps him from using.
With the right boundaries: You don't need to check his phone - you already know exactly how you'll handle dishonesty. Your brain settles because you have a plan. You're present. Engaged. Not emotionally tangled up in his choices. You support him - but without carrying his emotional load as if it's yours to solve.
Boundaries don't kill empathy. They protect it. They keep you from burning out. From becoming someone you don't recognise. From losing the softness, the compassion, the part of you that once felt so deeply.
There are two kinds of boundaries - and you need both.
Internal boundaries are the invisible guardrails inside your own head. They're what stop you from spiralling. They're the moment you notice you're about to absorb his stress, over-function, get pulled into his emotional world - and you step back instead. With love, without losing yourself.
External boundaries are your pre-decided responses for the moments that used to send you into freefall.
If you suspect he's lying - you don't spiral. You follow the plan. If he relapses - you don't panic. You already know your next steps. If he's disrespectful - you don't argue. You already know what you will and won't engage with.
Boundaries are not ultimatums. They are stability. They take the overthinking out of your hands so you can breathe again.
And they have to fit you.
You've heard the scripts. "Kick him out." "Zero tolerance." "Give him an ultimatum."
Maybe for a moment you thought they might work. Then you realised - your situation doesn't fit into neat little boxes.
Off-the-shelf boundaries are like off-the-shelf shoes. They might look fine. But walk a day in them and you've got blisters - because they weren't made for your feet.
The boundaries I help women design are tailored to your family, your reality, your values. They don't feel like a punishment or a wall. They feel like structure. Like ground under your feet. Like finally having a plan you can actually hold.
Even if you're unsure about whether you're staying or leaving, getting your boundaries right matters either way.
They make your day-to-day more manageable right now. They give you the clarity to make decisions from a calm, grounded place - not from overwhelm or rage or desperation. They work whether you stay or go.
You don't need another good week. You need boundaries so tailored, you'll actually keep them - even when he's being sweet again.

🔍 A full weak point analysis of your current boundaries
I'll look at what you're already doing or trying to do and tell you exactly where the gaps are - and why they're there. Understanding this is usually the moment everything clicks.
📝 1-2 complete boundary plans - built for your specific situations
For each situation you bring me, I'll design a full plan. What to do. What to say. Whether to tell him ahead of time. How to handle the feelings that come up in the moment - yours and his. How to follow through when he pushes back. No more freezing up, no more winging it when you're already flooded with adrenaline.
🧠Your internal boundary - the one nobody else sees
I'll identify exactly where you're leaking energy in your own head - the spiralling, the resentment, the second guessing, the loops that run at 2am. And I'll give you a specific internal boundary to install so you can close the tabs, stop the loop, and reclaim the energy you've been haemorrhaging for months.
Common Boundary Questions
"But what if he just bulldozes straight through it?"
This is very common, and here's what makes all the difference-Â a boundary isn't a rule you hand him to follow. It's a plan you have for what you will do. He doesn't have to respect it for it to work. He doesn't even have to know it exists. When he bulldozes, you already know what you're doing next. That's the whole point.
"I don't follow through. I've lost all trust in myself at this point."
I hear this a lot too. You've lost trust in yourself because you've been trying to hold boundaries that weren't designed properly for your situation in the first place.
A boundary you can't hold isn't a you problem. It's a design problem.
That's exactly what we fix inside the Boundary Breakthrough. We build something you can actually follow through on - because it fits.
"Boundaries just don't feel like a good fit for our family."
They don't have to look like anyone else's.
Some of the most powerful boundaries my clients have ever set are ones nobody else ever sees. No confrontation. no announcement, no risk of blowup.
Just a quiet internal commitment to what you will do. A boundary can be as small as what you will and won't engage with, what you will and won't say, where you will and won't put your energy. If it's protecting you and giving you a plan - it's a boundary. Full stop.
"What if it makes things worse? What if it triggers him and sends everything spiralling?"
This is such a valid fear. But here's what I want you to consider - the bracing you're doing right now? The walking on eggshells? The managing and absorbing? That has a cost too. It's just a cost you've been paying so long it feels normal.
The boundaries I help women design are not provocative. They're not aggressive. They're not designed to corner him or create a confrontation.
They're designed to protect you - quietly, firmly, and in a way that fits your family.
